How to Get Sleek Knotless Braid Parts That Last Two Weeks or More
The short answer: knotless parts stay sleek when the hair is stretched and clean before the install, each part is gelled thinly on damp hair, the finished style is set with mousse and tied down, and the parts are protected with satin every night. Most frizz at the parts comes from friction and product buildup, not from the braids loosening.
Knotless braids start from your natural hair at the root, which is exactly why they look so natural and why the parts are the first place frizz shows. Here is how to get them crisp and keep them that way.
Why knotless parts frizz faster
With traditional box braids, the extension hair is knotted at the root and covers it. With knotless, the first inch or so of every braid is your own hair, gradually fed in. That root is softer, more exposed and more affected by humidity, friction and new growth. The same thing that makes knotless look natural makes the parts more work to keep neat.
Before the install
- Start clean. Buildup from your last style makes gel grip unevenly and flake. Clarify and deep condition first.
- Stretch the hair. Blow dry on low heat, or band or thread the hair after washing. Stretched hair makes cleaner parts and a smoother root. It does not need to be bone straight.
- Trim split ends. Damaged ends poke out along the braid and look like frizz.
- Prep the braiding hair. Pre-stretched, pre-rinsed hair is less likely to frizz at the ends and less likely to irritate your scalp.
During the install
Parting
- Use a fine-tooth rat-tail comb and part with the tip, not the teeth.
- Keep the hair slightly damp while you part. A spray bottle of water is enough. Damp hair parts cleaner and holds gel better.
- Keep sections consistent. Uneven sections make uneven tension, and those are the braids that frizz first.
Gel technique
- Gel one section at a time, right before you braid it, so the gel does not dry before you get there.
- Apply along the part line and the root, thinly. Use the tail of the comb or a small brush to lay a narrow line of gel along each edge of the part, then smooth the root of the section.
- Keep gel off the scalp as much as you can. Gel on the skin is what flakes and itches later.
- Use less than you think. Thick gel is what turns white and cracks by week two. More detail on this is in our complete guide to braid gel.
Tension
Braid firmly enough that the root lies flat, but never so tight that you see raised bumps or feel pain. Too-tight roots look sleek on day one and pull your edges out over time.
Setting the finished style
- Mousse over the whole head. While the braids are still slightly damp from the install, smooth a light setting mousse over the parts and down the braids with your palms. It lays the flyaways gel missed.
- Tie it down. Wrap the whole head in a satin scarf, flat and snug, for 20 to 30 minutes, or sit under a hooded dryer on low. This is the step that makes the difference between parts that look good today and parts that look good in two weeks.
- Hot water the ends if needed. Dipping synthetic ends in hot water seals them and stops them from unraveling. Take care with the water, and protect your skin.
Keeping them sleek for weeks
- Satin every night, no exceptions. Cotton pillowcases cause more frizz at the parts than anything else.
- Tie the parts down before bed. A flat satin scarf under the bonnet keeps the roots pressed while you sleep.
- Refresh with mousse, not more gel. Once a week, a small amount of mousse smoothed over the parts and tied down resets frizz without building up layers.
- Touch up edges carefully. Wipe old product off with a damp cloth before you add more. Our post on braid gel vs edge control covers what to use where.
- Light moisture on the length. A water-based braid tonic on the braids keeps them soft without weighing down the roots.
- Wash carefully. Washing is where most parts get ruined. The stocking method in our guide to washing your scalp with braids keeps them intact.
- Hands off. Every time you touch your parts, you add oil and friction.
How long should the parts stay sleek?
With a clean start, thin gel, a proper tie-down and satin every night, parts can stay crisp for two weeks or more. After that, new growth starts to show at the root. You can refresh with mousse and a tie-down through weeks three and four, but some softness at the root is normal and is not a sign you did anything wrong.
What we use
The Braid and Style Kit is built for exactly this: BraidSculpt for the parts and the install, and SleekSet Mousse to set the style. BraidSculpt is a clear gel with keratin, argan oil and rosemary extract, formulated without drying alcohol so it holds without cracking or turning white. SleekSet is a lightweight mousse with castor oil, aloe and vitamin B5 that tames flyaways and dries clean. Both are made in our own GMP-certified, ISO-compliant lab in the USA.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep my knotless braids from getting frizzy?
Start with clean, stretched hair, gel each part thinly on damp hair, set the finished style with mousse and a 20 to 30 minute tie-down, and sleep in satin every night. Refresh weekly with mousse and a tie-down rather than adding more gel.
What is the best gel for knotless braid parts?
A clear gel without drying alcohol near the top of the ingredient list, with a humectant or oil to keep it flexible. It should hold the part without cracking or turning white.
Why do my parts turn white after a few days?
Usually too much gel, gel applied to dry hair, or a gel with drying alcohol that cracks as it ages. Use less, apply to damp hair, and choose a flexible formula.
Should I use mousse on knotless braids?
Yes. A light mousse smoothed over the braids after the install, and again once a week, is one of the best ways to lay flyaways without building up gel.
How do I refresh knotless braids at the root?
Lightly dampen the parts, smooth a small amount of mousse over them, and tie the head down with a satin scarf for 20 to 30 minutes. Avoid layering more gel on top of old gel.
